Savona

Savona, on Italy’s north-west coast, is where the explorer Christopher Columbus spent a large part of his life. Explore grand buildings from its wealthy past, including the Priamar Fortress, while there are also beaches within easy walking distance of the city centre. The sprawling port of Genoa is just along the coast and is historically one of the busiest ports in the Mediterranean.

Naples

Bustling Naples also serves as a gateway to key destinations including Sorrento, Positano, Capri and, of course, Pompeii, an ancient Roman city preserved under ash after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Head up the towering slopes of Mount Vesuvius, the only active volcano in mainland Europe, and savour a pizza in the city where this staple of Italian cuisine was first conceived. Wandering Naples’ streets, admire its wealth of grand architecture, with colonnaded palaces, domed gallerias and remarkable churches.

Catania

This city on Sicily’s east coast lies a few miles from Mount Etna and is the second largest on the island. It’s home to some of the finest Baroque architecture in Italy, including a number of grand colonnaded churches. La Pescheria, near the Piazza del Duomo, stakes a claim as Sicily’s most atmospheric market. Here you’ll find almost every species of fish living in the Mediterranean Sea, and there is a selection of nearby restaurants that make the most of the produce on offer, serving up fine seafood dishes.

You’ll have a day at sea to enjoy all the facilities on board Costa Diadema. Today you’ll dock at Crete. Head to Chania, the island’s most evocative city, with its pretty Venetian quarter, criss-crossed by narrow lanes, culminating at a magnificent harbour. Remnants of Venetian and Turkish architecture abound, with old townhouses now transformed into atmospheric restaurants and boutique hotels. Discover the beautiful harbour and enjoy a coffee or cocktail while taking in the idyllic surroundings.

Izmir

Turkey’s third most populous city after Istanbul and Ankara, Izmir has a history stretching back thousands of years when it was called Smyrna. A number of ancient empires have left their mark on the place, including the Romans and the Ottomans, but it also bears all the hallmarks of a modern, ambitious city, especially the Bayrakli district with its innovative office towers. For a more scenic and quieter experience, spend a few hours on the atmospheric Kordon Promenade with its spacious lawns and water-front restaurants.

With an overnight in port in Istanbul, you’ll have time to explore Turkey’s largest and most populous city, which straddles the continents of Europe and Asia. Find the time to visit one of the ancient hammams where you can enjoy a steam bath fit for a sultan. Several are dotted around the city, with some dating back to the 15th century. You’ll feel wonderful after being soaped, sponged and massaged into a state of renewed vigour. Afterwards, shop for trinkets at the Grand Bazaar, an Aladdin’s cave of goods, from confectionary to exquisite porcelain. Or you could take a scenic boat trip on the Bosphorous.
